The soca beat will start waists wining, feet stomping and hands waving at the Mas camp on Saturday January 7, when Bacchanal Jamaica signals the start of the Carnival 2017 with the traditional style and pizzazz it always brings to its New Year’s Party and Band Launch! The programme is jam packed with stellar entertainment and the showcasing of the exotic costumes for 2017.
Trinidadian soca songstress Patrice Roberts will be taking control of the stage, providing a preview of what the season has in store.
She normally performs with soca superstar Machel Montana and as cousin of Bunji Garlin can certainly be considered soca royalty. Patrice has not depended on her star associations and has enjoyed several recent hits – “Ah Feeling Mehself” (2015), “Old and Grey” (2016), “Money D (2016), “Oh Baby” a dancehall mix with Jamaican Busy Signal and most recently “Comfort “ on the Sauce label (2017).
Patrice, is no sudden flash in the pan. She has earned her stripes in the soca arena. She started singing at an early age of eight and by the time she was 10 she had copped the Sangre Grande Junior Calypso Monarch Competition. She repeated this feat several times in her teenage years and in 2001 she became the National Soca Monarch, the National Library Calypso Monarch and the National Junior Calypso Monarch. She again won the National Junior Calypso Monarch in 2002. Patrice Roberts has also competed in the International Soca Monarch in Trinidad on several occasions. In 2006, she placed second alongside Zan with the track “Always Be” in the “Groovy” category. Her collaboration with Machel Montano, “Light it Up” placed 4th in the “Power” category in 2007. In 2008, she placed second in the “Groovy” category with her song “More Wuk”. Her greatest achievement, so far, has been winning the 2006 Road March competition with the song “Band of the Year” sung with Machel Montana.
The night will also see top DJ’s Richie RAS and Franco bringing us old favourites but also newly released hits like Technically by Destra and Farmer Nappy, Wine Up by Kes and Good Morning by Peter Ram, for the 2017 season. The highly anticipated costume showcase will bring spectacular glitz and colour to the night and will launch the sales of the 2017 costumes. Twelve costumes will be modelled and will include the outstanding local and overseas designers.
Male, Female and spectacular Front Line costumes will dominate the stage. Costumes will be available for sale online as well as at the Mas Camp. The traditional sponsors, Pure Country, Smirnoff, Select Brand, Jamaica Observer, FAME, and Pepsi are again on board for 2017 states Michael Mc Morris, Bacchanal Director, “We owe a great deal to the support of our sponsors. We simply could not put on the show that we do every year without their backing so we are very grateful not only for the financial and in-kind contributions but their active participation at all our events.” Early bird tickets are now on sale until December 17 and are available online (www.touchstoneticketing.com) and at the Mas Camp.
